The Choice! - Health

Some people are born healthy and others are not. Some of us have to learn how to be healthy even when you are sick. It is possible for each one of us to obtain some degree of health no matter what chronic disease we are living with. We can all make healthy choices in eating right foods and caring for our bodies in a healthy matter by getting appropriate rest, sleep that our bodies need to function at a higher level. Daily, we all make choices good or bad what we are going to take into our bodies and how we’re going to live our lives. We make food and living choices, which will help us feel better or feel worse. It’s all up to us what we want to do the choice is ours!

We can improve our physical, mental and emotional being by what good we do for ourselves. We can be kind to ourselves by learning to take care of our bodies and by choosing to eat foods that are good for us. When we eat foods that are good for our bodies our bodies will feel healthier and happier! Our bodies will function better, our minds will think clearer and emotionally we will feel better about ourselves. To test this all you have to do is to eat some food that doesn’t do well with your body and note the feelings that your body experiences. How does your body feel? What does that food do to you or make you feel like? Is your head clear or foggy? Start to note what your body is saying to you. Your body gives you clues every day that you live. Pay attention and notice what foods make you feel better and more alert. What foods give you more energy?

When you realize what’s making you feel better start to use these foods in your diet. Choosing healthy foods isn’t always easy but it can be done even if you need to carry your own food with you I have for years. Healthy foods are fun, easy to prepare and are good for you! You make the choice!

Foods to Help Constipation

August 17, 2009, 7:02 am | visits: 2 | wordcount: 510

By John Lynch

How do you know what foods to help constipation are best? Given the fact that there seems to be so many "proven experts" in the market telling us what to eat and what not to. What if you could eat anything you literally want to eat and be sure that if there is any form of constipation, you'll eliminate it by nightfall. Well, there are quite a few people out there who can boast of providing a quick fix like that. However, if you've got constipation, you can eliminate it as fast as possible eating certain foods to help constipation. Here are some common foods to help constipation: 1. Figs and Dates. These are fruits high in fiber content. They take about twenty four hours before results can be seen. Because of its nature, figs enhance the process of digestion and are a rich source of fiber and minerals. This is not to mention the fact that they -figs and dates- produce serotonin. 2. Using Grapes Eating one or two pounds of grapes in a day will greatly reduce the incidence of constipation. Grapes contain a high quantity of minerals and vitamins, high fiber content, and manganese. They are a great laxative and bring instant relief to the stomach. 3. Pawpaw Pawpaw also known as Carica papaya is a well known fruit containing the enzyme papain. But not many know it for its qualities as a food for constipation. The high mineral content of the pawpaw reduces cell waste, gets rid of stomach mucus and colon mucus. To use them effectively, you can eat in between meals or add to smoothies. 4. Persimmon Another important food to help constipation, Persimmons have been reputed to be as highly nutritious as an apple and some claim it may yield better results for the heart. This is because of the high content of fiber and minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese, sodium, iron etc. These minerals including phenolic compounds are anti-oxidants and as a result, colon cleaners. For quick results, eat two to three of it daily. 5. Plums These are fruits with high mineral content in addition to having a gentle laxative property. They are very effective in clearing gas from the bowels. 6. Prunes These are plums that are dried. So the both of them can be used interchangeably. But prunes are generally more effective food for constipation than plums are. Because of the high iron content prunes are generally considered one of the best ways to relieve constipation. 7. Raspberry The raspberry is a fruit rich in Vit A and C. It is also rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium. Eating them during the day in copious quantities will relieve your constipation fast. 8. Pineapple Pineapple is used as an aid to good digestion in many supplements. The fruit itself is excellent for helping digestion and helps to regulate the bowels. These common foods to help constipation are freely available and should be part of our daily diet. Break the Chain of Yo-Yo Dieting

August 17, 2009, 11:00 am | visits: 2 | wordcount: 554

By Karen Fullick

So what is Yo-Yo dieting Yo-yo dieting is a repeated loss and gain of body weight due to excessive dieting. My dear mum was a classic Yo-Yo dieter, she would talk incessantly about her weight and the current super diet that she was on and how this was the one that would work for her. Every time there was a special event ahead like a wedding, anniversary or holiday, she would embark on a new diet plan. I remember watching her eat some appalling concoctions or starving herself of food in the belief that this would make her slim forever. In many cases she did lose a lot of weight only to pile it back on after the special event had taken place. Each time she gained the weight, she always gained a little more than her start weight, only to start the process all over again for the next up and coming event!! Why do people Yo-Yo diet There are two reasons a person goes on a diet – Appearance and Health. Either way the individual will embark on a diet, often something that is extreme and deprives them of quantity and or variety of food. Invariably these diets are unbalanced and after the initial period of elation from weight loss they find them hard to maintain, craving foods that they used to eat and then eating them in large volume. The individual may lack the necessary nutrients and start to have feelings of ill health. This leads to the failure of the diet plan – weight gain of the weight lost and more – and the inevitable merry-go-round cycle of Yo-Yo dieting begins and in most cases continues throughout the person's life as it did with my Mum. My Experience with Yo-Yo dieting I have been a Yo-Yo dieter most of my life, however, in my teen's and 20's I did manage my weight quite well albeit by constant yo-yoing. The only difference between me and my Mum is that I was conscious that what I was doing was not good for me and when I was being sensible I was eating a healthy, balanced, nutritious diet. Effect on emotions Yo-Yo dieting has an enormous effect on your emotions. The high from losing weight, with the crash to the low from regaining it is soul destroying and the feelings of failure are immense. The need to look as good as the person you aspire to and not being able to attain this makes you feel a failure. The lack of correct nutrition can lead to depression. How can we stop this process Weight control has nothing to do with dieting. Weight control is all about eating the right foods in the right quantities with occasional treats that satisfy us. By following this way of eating, you will never need to diet again. Yo-Yo dieting is a state of mind, you subconscious mind has been programmed to allow you to feed yourself in this way. However, your mind can be reprogrammed. Reprogramming the mind to be in control of what you eat is a simple and safe way to lose weight and find renewed health and well being. Karen Fullick - Nutritional Therapist Tip of the day Make a note of what you eat today no matter what it is. Then review this to see the good and bad food choices and quantities. It will start to make you aware of your eating habits!

Bob Greene Best Life Diet

I am very leery of diet plans, so when I heard about Bob Greene's Best Life diet plan I was skeptical. I wasted no time in checking it out and it seemed, well, wrong. I had always believed that diets were crash courses, and these were the ones I participated in. Start fast and furious wiping out and replacing everything I ate and then very slowly working back towards getting to eat what I wanted. The more I investigated Bob Greene's diet plan the more it starting making abundant sense. Not only that, but as the Ah-Ha light came on, I also recalled that most people fail at dieting because it is too hard to change your lifestyle so drastically so quickly. It started to click that in starting off slowly, you see success in getting healthy and that makes you want to become healthier. Then you will take it to the next level because you are liking what you are seeing and feeling. Furthermore, you will end up where you want to spend your life, eating healthy and exercising regularly.Bob Greene says this about his best life diet: "Losing weight the right way - so you shed pounds and keep them off - takes time". This is what inspired Bob Greene to create a "for life" plan that requires you to only gradually make small but powerful lifestyle changes, like eating a nutritious breakfast each day and moving about more. And you will see the results you wanted all along, to not only slim down but to also live the healthiest, happiest life possible - this is your Best Life.Unlike the well worn starting and stopping diet plan, this one is a journey to a lifestyle change. The diet plan is not about lifetime restrictions but about being sure you can continue to enjoy food. And do so without a constant struggle to stay at a healthy weight. Bob Greene's Best Life diet has 3 easy phases each with a 4 week duration. Phase 1 jumpstarts your weight loss by getting your metabolism going by eating 3 meals and a snack. Also upping the activity levels begins burning calories. Phase 2 is the level that changes eating habits with removing 6 bad foods. You set up a food plan based on the diet plan's Hunger Scale. Phase 3 is the finale where healthy eating and healthy energy levels equal a new healthy ongoing lifestyle. The only loophole I can see is the portion control. This is vital in healthy eating. However, an upside is you start increasing your activity level on day one up to 30 minutes 3 times a week. This is a great way to jumpstart your metabolism. All in all - Bob Greene's Best Life Diet is a homerun. The only way you can have a long healthy, happy life is to eat well and keep the body moving. This diet plan gives you the straightforward truth that will allow you to achieve success.

Advice on Healthy Eating Habits

Today, it seems about half of all people in the US are more or less overweight. Indeed, this means there is a huge demand for advice on how to eat better to avoid weight problems. The most important thing anyone can do when looking for healthy eating advice is to remember that not all advice is good. There are so many fad diets out there that a person can easily become overwhelmed and misinformed. At least there is one thing everyone dealing out advice agrees on - namely that if you are overweight you need to lose some of that weight to regain your optimal health. The problem is how to go about losing that extra weight.Generally speaking, there is no simple general diet plan which will be just right for everybody. Different people have different types of problems - like if you have diabetes then there are special diet restrictions that apply to you.Take the Atkins diet for example. In my opinion, you should avoid this particular diet if you happen to have some kind of heart problem.I would go as far as to say this: Don't go on a diet! What happens if you do? Well, you struggle for a while and then go back to your familiar old eating habits - which are not good for you. Instead, you need a fundamental change of those habits into new, healthy, habits. The best possible place to find healthy eating advice that will effectively help you lose weight and feel better is your doctor's office. Your doctor is not trying to sell you anything, and they know your medical history. This means they will give you healthy eating advice that will fit your lifestyle and your unique health situation. Another good alternative is to consult a nutritionist. Obviously, a nutritionist is a specialist in the subject of nutrition! And therefore is likely to provide you with some good advice. There are many sources for healthy eating advice online, and you will find many good suggestions. Remember that most articles online are only meant to be a guide, and you should always discuss any new healthy eating advice you have received with your doctor before beginning a diet plan or lifestyle.

Getting an Ideal Weight for your Child

Arriving at an ideal weight for a child can be complicated sometimes. Adults use the Body Mass Index to measure their ideal weight. But for children, this is not the case. Their ideal weight are calculated on length for age and weight for age percentile charts. If your child weighs more than children in the 95th percentile, he or she is considered overweight. Above the 85th percentile and your child is considered to be at risk of becoming overweight. You can see the growth charts for boys and girls age 2-20 by going to www.cdc.gov/growthcharts.Bear in mind that the chart is only for comparison purposes and as a guide. Fitting your kid weight neatly into a certain category should not be a priority but instead the child overall health is more important. If your child is approaching the 85th percentile, you'll want to look at your family's lifestyle and see where you can make improvements. You should also talk to your pediatrician before you make the determination that your child is overweight.Parents often become over duly concerned if their children do not fall within the ideal weight range. Thus they tend to get obsessed with constant weighing of their child. Such actions can be detrimental to a child health instead.Use your common sense to monitor your child's weight. Help your child to have a healthy lifestyle by providing her with a nutritious diet and plenty of opportunities to exercise. It's also critical for you to be a good role model.Keep your entire family healthy by adopting a healthy lifestyle. By seeing your lifestyle, you child will follow what he or she see as a good example. When she or he does that, the result will be a healthy weight situation for him or her.
