Swine Flu in Pets

I was watching the news a few weeks ago and the American Veterinary Medical Associaion confirmed the first 13 year old tabby cat in Iowa was positive for the
H1N1 influenza virus in Nov 2009. This is the first cat diagonosed with this flu strain. How did a indoor cat get the swine flu? The vet believed that the cat caught the virus from one of the family members in his home who was sick with H1N1. The cat recovered and hasn't infected anyone or any other animal.

I recently read in the newspaper of a pig farmer having H1N1 in his herd of pigs and he had to put them all down because his hired hand was sick with the virus. His employee continured to work while he was sick with H1N1 and he gave it to the pigs.

The vet said pet owners need to take preventative measures so we don't spread the swine flu to our pets. Make sure you and your family always wash your hands, don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth and stay in if you're sick. The pig farmer lost his whole herd of pigs from one sick employee. Let's be careful to protect our pets by good health practices as you would do this for other people.
